United Way of Onslow County’s first ‘Summer Feeding’ program underway

United Way of Onslow County’s ‘Summer Feeding’ program officially opened its doors today for the season.

The organization will serve hot meals to children Monday through Thursday, 11-1 at the Sandy Run Missionary Baptist Church from now until August 21st. On Thursdays, children will go home with the group’s Children Healthy Eating on Weekends {CHEW} bags with enough food to hold them over until the following Monday. Today they served 65 children.

United Way of Onslow County and local church launch summer feeding program

United Way of Onslow County is partnering with Sandy Run Missionary Baptist Church to launch a new program that will feed children over the summer.

Starting June 16, 2025 until August 21st, the organizations will serve hot meals Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. out of the church’s new fellowship hall. United Way of Onslow County’s President Raquel Painter said children will also pick up United Way’s CHEW (Children Healthy Eating on Weekends) bags Thursday with enough food to get them through the weekend.

Joe Burkhead

Joe, originally from Iowa, made the move to Jacksonville in 1990. He now resides in the downtown area with his partner. Joe's unwavering commitment to helping others extends to friends, family, and the community. Since 2017, he has been an active volunteer with CHEW (Children Healthy Eating on the Weekends). Joe's motivation to give back stems from overcoming childhood food insecurity.

Lisa Heavilin

 

Lisa Heavilin, a dedicated community leader and finance professional, hails from northern Indiana, where she attended Purdue University. It was during her time at Purdue that she met her husband, Mitch, who is currently active duty in the United States Coast Guard. After relocating across several states, Lisa and her family have called Jacksonville, NC, home for the past 10 years.
