"The United Way of Onslow County installed a new caterpillar tunnel at its community farm in Hubert as part of the nonprofit’s work to expand access to fresh, locally grown produce for residents.

The tunnel was recently installed at the farm, located at 321 Freeman Ave., and will allow the farm to produce a greater quantity and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables year-round by extending the growing season and protecting crops from harsh weather, said Raquel Painter, United Way of Onslow County president.

Caterpillar tunnels are greenhouse-like structures covered with durable plastic sheeting that create a controlled growing environment.

The installation is part of an ongoing initiative by the United Way of Onslow County to strengthen local food systems and address food deserts throughout the region. Food deserts are low-income areas where residents have limited access to retail outlets selling healthy and affordable foods, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Our goal is simple — ensure families in Hubert and throughout Onslow County have reliable access to healthy, fresh food,” Painter said.

“The caterpillar tunnel will help us grow more produce, extend our growing season and better support neighbors who may otherwise struggle to access nutritious food.”

Produce grown at the community farm will be distributed through local food assistance programs and community partners, helping to bring fresh fruits and vegetables directly to people living in food deserts across Onslow County.

The project reflects the United Way’s commitment to building healthier communities by improving food access, supporting sustainable agriculture and fostering partnerships that address local needs, Painter said.

Community members and volunteers are encouraged to stay engaged with the farm’s growing efforts as the new tunnel begins producing crops in the coming seasons."
